Columbus police investigating accidental shooting

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Columbus police were on the scene of a reported shooting in the city's Midtown neighborhood on Saturday night.

Authorities found Joseph Weeks, 18, with a shotgun wound in a home near the intersection 17th Street and Wells Drive.

Columbus Police tell News Leader 9 four people, including the victim, were outside the home looking at a shotgun and another weapon.  Weeks went inside.  The shotgun went off, fired through a bathroom window and hit the victim. 

Weeks was taken to The Medical Center where he underwent surgery.  He was later pronounced dead. 

Police say a 17-year-old pulled the trigger. Investigators are still interviewing the three 17-19 year olds involved.

Weeks' body will be sent to the GBI state crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.
