Army school opponents plan return to Fort Benning

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Opponents of a school that trains Latin American military officers at Fort Benning are gearing up to return for their annual protest outside the Army post in Columbus.

The group School of Americas Watch says protesters will converge on the area for three days of demonstrations starting Nov. 18.

Hundreds of people gather to protest every year at Fort Benning to call for the U.S. government to close the institute formerly known as the School of the Americas. Opponents say Latin American officers trained at the school have been known to use those skills to commit human rights abuses in their home countries.

Last year, police arrested at least 22 protesters for trying to enter the Army post. Most were charged with misdemeanors such as criminal trespassing.
