COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - St. Francis Hospital is expanding the way they do healthcare in the area by expanding their facilities.

Sixty-three years ago community leaders broke ground on St. Francis Hospital and Tuesday was the same story as St. Francis Hospital prepares for its new expansion.

Georgia State Representative Debbie Buckner says, "I think it's a wonderful opportunity to improve and make it even better than it's been in the past for the healthcare of our region."

The $110 million project will add nearly 400,000 square feet to the quickly growing hospital.

President and CEO Robert Granger told News Leader Nine, "We are clearly moving and expanding for private rooms for all patients, and clearly taking our cardio-vascular center to a new level with this dedicated unit, and we're partnering to bring physicians on to our campus which is a new thing, and we certainly set aside room for an obstetrical service that we're really excited about offering a full blown women's care here on our campus for the first time in 40 years."

The Woodruff family donated the land for the hospital to be built on in 1948 and today the hospital just keeps growing.

Christopher Woodruff held a shovel at the groundbreaking, just like his great-grandfather did years ago, "The family and myself both realize the power and importance of this hospital to Columbus and the ability to receive quality healthcare right in your backyard."

Granger added, "It's a recommitment of our 63 year history of serving our commitment and a recognition that, that mission and ministry is going to go on for another 50 to 60 years based on today."

Construction has already begun and hospital officials say you can expect to see the expansion complete in 2013.
