Metro-area's jobless rate jumps to 9.8%

Unemployment numbers for Columbus were released Thursday morning.

The Georgia Department of Labor announced that in September, the metro-area's unemployment rate rose to 9.8%.

That's an increase of .1% from August this year.

That's an increase from September 2010's rate of 9.2%.

Officials tell us the increase was caused by layoffs in retail trade, administrative and support service, as well as health care and social assistance.

In addition, there were about 290 more job seekers looking for work.

For the state of Georgia, September's unemployment rate was 10.3%.
