Soldiers reunited with families after deployment

More than a hundred local soldiers are thrilled to be home after a year-long deployment in the Middle East.

At the welcome home celebration for the 1177th Transportation Company of the Georgia Army National Guard, fathers were hugging their babies for the first time, cars were decorated to welcome troops home, and families were finally together after more than a year.

These soldiers came home on Thursday to in LaGrange after a few months of training and another 12 months deployed in Qatar next to Saudi Arabia.

Amber Wells was one of the many wives waiting to greet their husbands.

"We can actually start out marriage and our family over from the get-go since he's been gone for so long," said Amber Wells.

Her husband, First Lieutenant Charles Wells, was deployed only weeks after their wedding.

"It gets stressful at times, but every now and then, with a phone call and talking to her on the Internet, the way technology is, it made it a little bit better," said the soldier.

First Sergeant Edward Tucker says more than 100 soldiers like Wells acted as security forces Camp Asalaya in Qatar.

"Our job was to keep the people who were during those unique things safe.  We had several checks that we had to go through that came onto that installation.  There were serious threats outside the installation, but, because of our soldiers diligences those threats never made it to us," said Tucker.

Company Commander Captain Darrel Geving says the soldiers faced many challenges during their deployment.

"For the majority of soldiers, this was their first time being away from their families for a very extended period of time.  So, that was very difficult and challenging.  We had soldiers that missed the births of their children," said Geving.

Wells says he is happy to be with his wife again, but this soldier still says he might be little more excited about American cuisine.

"Zaxby's.  That is already the number one on the list."
