COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - The Aflac duck is poised to quack into the world of big-time balloons and floats during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Executives with the Columbus-based insurance firm say they've designed a giant duck "balloonicle" and have been testing it in South Dakota to make sure it stands up to wind and is parade-ready.
Parade spokesman Orlando Veras says a balloonicle is powered by a small, golf cart-like vehicle sometimes used in farming. The vehicle will be completely encompassed by the 35-foot-high balloon that forms the Aflac duck. He said the driver can see out, but parade viewers can't see in.
Company spokeswoman Laura Kane said one reason Aflac chose the balloonicle concept for the duck's first Macy's parade appearance is its bottom-heavy shape, which could pose problems as a balloon.
