COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - It was a normal Friday in kindergarten for Mackenzie Reese.  As she ate lunch and slurped on a slushie.  Little did she know she would get the surprise of her life.

Phenix City Elementary Principal David Jones announces they are having a special guest for lunch.

"Lt Charles Wells," yelled the principal.

Mackenzie puts down the slushie, said "that's my daddy."  Then she ran in to his arms.

First Lieutenant Charles Wells was deployed only weeks after his wedding to wife Amber.  He was gone for 12 months to Qatar.

He arrived home Thursday night with 100 other soldiers from his unit.

Wells says he was pleasantly surprised by Mackenzie's reaction and told News Leader 9  it felt good to have her back in his arms.

Lt. Wells said, "Being away from family is always stressful, but I think it is more stressful for them because I am away and she has to take over all the other roles."

Jones said, "We had one table of kindergartners after it was over say they wanted to see more. And, we would like to see more. It is great when a soldier comes home and their children get to see mom or dad."

The family will spend the weekend making up for lost time, celebrating Halloween at a Fall Festival.
