Phenix City receives grant to improve 13 streets

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has awarded $700,000 to improve living conditions and get rid of safety hazards in Phenix City and Tuskegee.

Phenix City received a $250,000 grant to improve 13 streets.

"Each community in Alabama has specific needs and priorities that must be addressed in order to maintain and improve the quality of life for residents," Bentley said. "The Community Development Block Grant program helps local governments, operating under increasingly tight budgets, to undertake urgent improvement projects that otherwise would be impossible without cutting other services for residents."

Several streets in the North Railroad Street neighborhood will be resurfaced.

Potholes, worn asphalt and uneven surfaces have been cited by the city as being hazardous for traffic.  About 3 miles of roadway will be resurfaced.

Phenix City will pitch in about $80,000 in funding for the project.
