CSU Men win preseason basketball opener

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus State men's basketball team used a balance offensive attack on their way to an 81-58 victory over Brewton-Parker in an exhibition game on Tuesday night in the Lumpkin Center.

Eight different players scored at least six points for the Cougars led by senior Paul Darkwa who went 6-for-11 from the field and also hit all three of his foul shots.

The contest started off fairly even through the opening four minutes as CSU held a slight 10-8 lead after Stefan Frank hit a three-pointer for Brewton-Parker to cut into their deficit.

At that point, Columbus State went on a 12-0 run to extend their lead to 22-8 with 11:32 remaining in the first half. Darkwa led the surge scoring six of the team's points while Winford Ivey capped it off with a three-pointer.

Both teams would trade off baskets over the next six minutes as Brewton-Parker slimmed the lead down by a point (34-21) before the Cougars erupted for another double-digit run, this one a 10-0 stretch. Four different players scored during the outburst including trifectas by Idell Bell and Steve Peterson to end the spurt. That gave CSU their biggest lead of the first half, 23 points, before ending the half ahead 46-26.

Not allowing Brewton-Parker the opportunity for new life in the final twenty minutes of action, the Cougars extended their 20 point lead with an 11-4 run to open the half to push their advantage to 27 points, the largest of the game with 13:36 to go.

The two sides would trade off runs as BP first cut their deficit to under 20 points (66-47) outscoring CSU 17-9 over the next five minutes of play. Wendell Williams sparked the Barons nailing three consecutive three-pointers.

Columbus State responded with a 10-2 spurt again pushing the advantage to 27 points (76-49) with only 4:13 left in the contest. Dimitri Davis capped off run receiving an alley-oop pass from AJ Sheppard for the impressive slam.

For the game, Darkwa paced CSU with 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting while Steve Peterson and Johnathan Murphy chipped in with 14 points and 12 points, respectively. Dariuis Mcknight led the team with 10 rebounds and three blocks. As a team, the Cougars shot 50% (28-for-56) from the field and from three-point range (8-for-16) including an impressive 71.4% mark in the first half. They also forced 19 Baron turnovers.

Brewton-Parker was led by Williams who scored a game-high 16 points while Moukoury added 12 points. Mourkoury also registered a team-best eight rebounds while Darrie Stephens had six boards. BP shot 40.4% (21-for-52) from the floor including 9-for-28 (32.1%) from downtown.

The Cougars will now have 10 days to get ready for the season opener on November 11 at the Nova Southeastern Tip-off Tournament. They will take on Puerto Rico Mayaguez with a scheduled tip for 1:00 p.m. ET.
