Jarvis Jones earns another national honor

ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia redshirt sophomore Jarvis Jones was named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Player of the Week on Tuesday, adding to his accolades following his performance in the victory over Florida.

Jones will be added to the 2011 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List.  The Nagurski Trophy will be presented to the best defensive player in college football on Dec. 12 by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.  The keynote address will be given by Bulldog head coach Mark Richt.  Five finalists for the Nagurski Trophy will be announced on Nov. 17.

Each week during the 2011 season the FWAA All-AmericanCommittee has selected a national defensive player of the week from nominations made by the 11 Division I Bowl Subdivision Conferences and major independents.

Jones, an outside linebacker, had already been named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week, the Southeastern Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week, Rivals.com SEC Player of the Week and the College Football Performance Awards National Player of the Week earlier in the week.

A 6-3, 241-pound native of Columbus, Ga., Jones finished with four sacks for minus 27 yards and five total tackles to go along with a forced fumble during his team's six consecutive win.  His four sacks rank in a tie for second most in a game in school history, and the most since Charles Grant had four versus Auburn in 2001.  Jones is only the fifth Bulldog in school history to record at least four sacks in a contest.

Jones leads the SEC with eight sacks in eight games and is ranked fifth nationally.  He helped anchor a defense that held the Gators to minus 19 yards rushing and only a single offensive touchdown.  In fact, Georgia's defense has allowed just six touchdowns in the past 24 quarters.

Georgia (6-2, 5-1 SEC) hosts New Mexico State (3-5, 1-3 WAC) in Sanford Stadium on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET.  CSS is televising the game.  This marks the first of three straight home games for the Bulldogs.
