COLUMBUS, GA (AP) - A jury in Columbus has convicted a 52-year-old man of raping and molesting a 12-year-old girl, and a judge has sentenced him to life in prison.

Jurors took about 40 minutes on Wednesday to convict Otis Pugh, Sr. of rape, aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. They acquitted Pugh on six other charges.

The Ledger-Enquirer reports Superior Court Judge Bobby Peters then sentenced Pugh to life in prison. He must serve 30 years before becoming eligible for parole.

Pugh's attorney asked jurors during closing arguments to believe his client had sex with a 12-year-old only once, and urged them to dismiss nine other counts.

The prosecutor told jurors Pugh wanted them to take the word of a monster over the story of a girl raped in her own bed.
