Cracked tree won't delay Lenox Mall Christmas lighting

ATLANTA (AP) - A new Christmas tree will be hoisted atop an Atlanta department store after the first one broke before it could be put in place.

The new 70-foot white pine on Macy's at Atlanta's Lenox Mall signals the start of the Christmas season.

It will replace the 60-foot tree that broke Sunday.

Melissa Goff with Macy's said the store usually selects its tree from a Georgia forest, but drought conditions have made it difficult to find a healthy tree this year.

The new tree is from Lithia Springs. Rachel Deal tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB-TV that her father planted it as a seedling when she was a young girl near the family's cabin in the north Georgia mountains. He later brought it from that spot to Lithia Springs.
