Food Stamps benefits remain a problem for hundreds

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - For nearly three weeks, single parent Genard Johnson says he's not received any word about when he would get his Food Stamp Benefits for November.

Johnson tells us he was notified about the new distribution schedule, but when it came time for his annual review his benefits were cut off and he wasn't told when they would be available to him again.

"I don't know when I'm going to receive my food stamps, I don't know anything. When I left all they told me was that they were going to call me," Johnson said.

A call Johnson he and his 17 year old son are eagerly waiting for. He says they've had a tough time getting food and they've had to turn to his family and girlfriend for help.

"Thanksgiving is 12 days away basically and nobody has their benefits and we don't know what we will do for thanksgiving."

Tuesday morning, the line at the Muscogee County Department of Family Services stretched to the front of the Health Department. Johnson stood in line with hundreds of others looking for answers.

"Half of them in there, they didn't get their food stamps they didn't get their Medicaid, they filled it out and did what they were supposed to do but no one got their stuff."

According to State reports, more than a million people receive food stamp benefits in Georgia. Nearly 50 million receive those benefits nationwide.
