Hundreds
of people are arriving in Columbus this weekend to Protest Whinsec, or the
Western Hemisphere Institute for Security cooporation, which is a school on
Fort Benning.
The program, formerly known as School of Americas, or SOA has
drawn protesters for a couple decades. Hundreds of those protestors gathered at
City Hall in downtown Lumpkin, GA.
According to Georgia Detention Watch, the
Stewart Detention Center holds about 2,000 immigrant men for proceedings.
The
Center is run by the Corrections Corporation of American - one of the largest
private prison companies in the U-S.
The company sent us this statement by
email Friday in regards to the protest:
"We're mystified why these
individuals would want to protest a company that saves taxpayers millions,
provides safe, humane housing for detainees and helps keep communities
safe."
