Hundreds of SOA protesters convene in Lumpkin, GA

Hundreds of people are arriving in Columbus this weekend to Protest Whinsec, or the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security cooporation, which is a school on Fort Benning.

The program, formerly known as School of Americas, or SOA has drawn protesters for a couple decades. Hundreds of those protestors gathered at City Hall in downtown Lumpkin, GA.

According to Georgia Detention Watch, the Stewart Detention Center holds about 2,000 immigrant men for proceedings.

The Center is run by the Corrections Corporation of American - one of the largest private prison companies in the U-S.

The company sent us this statement by email Friday in regards to the protest:

"We're mystified why these individuals would want to protest a company that saves taxpayers millions, provides safe, humane housing for detainees and helps keep communities safe."

SOA watch protestors are uniting in solidarity with Georgia Detention Watch, calling for the close of the Stewart Detention Center.
