(WTVM) - Glenwood's upset bid fell short as Bessemer Academy outlasted the Gators 35-21 to win the AISA Class AAA state title on Friday night at Troy University's Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Devin Johnson led the Rebels to victory with three touchdown passes. Xavier Bond ran for all three Glenwood scores.
Meanwhile, the Central Red Devils advanced to the AHSAA 6A state semifinals for the second time in school history with a 41-0 drubbing of visiting McGill-Toolen. Jonathan Wallace gave the Devils an unassailable lead with two touchdown runs and a scoring pass in the first half.
Central will play at Prattville next Friday night for a berth in the state finals.
In Georgia, Carver earned its seventh straight trip to the GHSA quarterfinals with a 35-12 win over Laney at McClung Memorial Stadium. Marquez Holloway broke the game open in the second quarter with 47-yard and 40-yard TD runs to give the Tigers a 21-6 halftime advantage.
Carver will face Fitzgerald in the next round, with the home team to be determined by a coin flip this weekend.
The area's other teams did not fare as well. In Class A, a second-half field goal gave Bremen a 10-7 win over Marion County, while Greenville lost at Eagle's Landing Christian, 41-0. Troup was eliminated from the Class AAA playoffs by two-time defending state champ Sandy Creek, 42-14.
