COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Thanksgiving for Soldiers is a program that has volunteer families host a soldier away from home for Thanksgiving.
For the third year in a row, Jonathan and Amanda Hicks will be opening their homes to two soldiers from Fort Benning for Thanksgiving.
It all started when Jonathan Hicks heard about Thanksgiving for Soldiers in church. A program that has local families host soldiers on Thanksgiving.
Both Amanda and Jonathan were in the NAVY and vividly remember not being alone on the holidays.
"You really want to be around family during the holidays. It's not one of those things you want to be alone. So it was just something we wanted to do," says Amanda Hicks.
Thanksgiving for Soldiers has had so many volunteer host families, they're now full. Jonathan says that's the greatest thanks you could give a soldier in Thanksgiving.
"That just shows the love and support that we have for our military and me being a veteran brings a special tear to my eye as well as knowing that there's so much support in our community.
The Hicks say in the past they take the soldiers to a Cottonmouths game after dinner but because there's no game this year they will take them to a movie.
