New law bars expensive gifts for Alabama teachers

MOBILE, AL (AP) - Students at Alabama public schools won't be able to give their teachers gift certificates or anything deemed valuable without breaking Alabama's new ethics law.

Jim Sumner, director of the Alabama Ethics Commission, says students can still bake cookies or bring in something consumable such as hand lotion or a candle, a potted plant or a coffee cup.

The Press-Register reports that Sumner says cash or anything that a teacher could resell is not permitted, as are holiday turkeys and ham.

The law is vague, stating that an item must be of "de minimis" value, which, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, means "lacking significance or importance.
