Carver advances to semis; Central eliminated

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The 3rd-ranked Carver Tigers survived an early scare to beat No. 4 Fitzgerald 34-21 on Friday night at McClung Memorial Stadium and advance to the GHSA Class AA state semifinals.

The Purple Hurricanes hit a pooch-kick on the opening kickoff that the Tigers could not corral. It was recovered on the Carver 32 yard line by Carl McCray. On the first play from scrimmage, Tolerance Shepard scored on a double-reverse to give Fitzgerald a 6-0 lead.

But the Tigers responded with a 15-play drive for a touchdown, and never relinquished the lead.

Torrance McGee scored on two one-yard quarterback keepers, while Marquez Holloway had a 31-yard scoring run and Brandon Thomas added an 18-yard TD run.

Next Friday night, Carver will face No.1 Buford, the three-time defending state champs. A coin-flip on Saturday will determine which team will host the game.

Carver played at Buford in the third week of the season, losing to the Wolves, 35-7.

In Alabama playoff action, Central lost at No. 6 Prattville, 45-12, in the AHSAA Class 6A state semifinals. It marks the third straight year the Lions have knocked the Red Devils out of the state playoffs.
