(CNN) - Americans 65 years old and older are now the largest segment of the population when it comes to size and percentage.
New data released today by the Census Bureau finds that the age group grew at a faster rate than the total population from 2000 to 2009.
Older women still outnumber older men -- but men have closed the gap over the decade. The South has the most number of people ages 65 and older at 14.9 million residents.
The West had the smallest percentage of people 65 and older.
