Good Samaritan gets robbed while helping stranger

This is the season of giving, and many people want to help out, but what if your act of kindness ends up costing you in the end? That's what happened to one man when he stopped to help a stranded driver.

The Salem, Alabama resident was driving home from work earlier this week when he saw a car on the side of Highway 280.

"I saw a car with caution lights on and the hood was up. I saw a baby carriage on the roof, that's the whole reason I pulled over because I thought there was a child." The victim, who didn't want to reveal his identity, says he got out to ask the stranded driver if he was alright, "By that time he had slammed the hood shut, rushed me and before I could react I had been hit right above the eye."

Law enforcement officials say they appreciate people trying to help others, but you shouldn't always trust those who appear to be in need.

Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr told FOX 54, "It's very unfortunate that you have some people in this community that want to do the right thing, want to be helpful, and then something like this happens and they become jaded to helping other people."

The victim says the man he stopped to help got away with cash and left the good Samaritan with a knot on his head, "The physical will go away but the emotional... I still have knots in my stomach and I don't want it to happen to anyone else."

Law enforcement officials say no matter how much you want to help they encourage you to fight the urge. They say you can do the most good by simply driving by and dialing 9-1-1.
