Blacksburg, VA (WWBT)- After Virginia Tech got stomped by Clemson in Saturday night's ACC Championship game, many thought their hopes of a BCS bowl game berth were history. The BCS has a habit of surprising people, however, both in good and bad ways, and the Hokies were the beneficiary of the system when selection time came.
Virginia Tech will battle Michigan in the Sugar Bowl on January 3. The Hokies finished the season 11-2 with both losses coming to Clemson. It marks the 19th straight year that Virginia Tech has reached a postseason bowl game. Michigan is 10-2 and this will mark the first meeting between these two teams in history.
Both teams receive the Sugar Bowl bid ahead of several teams that ranked in the top ten in the final BCS standings. Arkansas, Boise State and South Carolina were all left out of the BCS picture, despite holding top ten status. LSU and Alabama are two SEC teams battling for the national championship, making it harder for the Razorbacks and Gamecocks as fellow SEC squads.
As for Virginia, the Cavaliers are headed to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in Atlanta to battle defending national champion Auburn on December 31. This marks the Cavs' first bowl appearance since the 2007 season and their third meeting with the Tigers. The two teams split their last two meetings. This will be Virginia's fourth appearance in this bowl game, formerly known as the Peach Bowl. Mike London led his Wahoos to an 8-4 season and earned ACC Coach of the Year honors.
