One week until opening of new Publix in Columbus

Agatha Harden remembers what Cross Country Plaza looked like years ago, when it was the hot spot for shopping in Columbus.

"The stores that were here then are no longer here, but it was a big deal for us.  I remember there used to be a store right over there that had the best chocolate covered peanuts," said Harden.

Time meant change for the shopping center and Midtown as a whole slowly deteriorating over the years.

However, we are a week away from another change.  One Publix Supermarket will close its doors, and a brand new store will open right across the parking lot.

Anne King with Midtown Inc. says the new Publix is one more step in the rebirth of Midtown.

"[It is part of] the revitalization of that entire shopping center.  [There is also] the potential for new retail moving in there, and with the natatorium, and city services center.  There's just a lot happening now," said King.

Publix says the new store has about 17,000 square feet more than the old building.  There will be a drive through pharmacy, an expanded floral department, a larger produce department, and an increased wine selection.

"We're excited about the potential for the space that Publix is moving out of. So, that's going to be a surprise for all of us," said King.

Store representatives say products in the old store will be distributed to other Publix in Columbus and Phenix City.  The new store will be freshly stocked and shoppers cannot wait to see what it has to offer.

"Every time my wife gets a chance, she brings me out here.  And this is what I'm stuck with, this parking.  The new one will give us a lot of parking spaces," said Archie Alexander.

"[I'm looking forward to] more selections and everything because sometimes, I shop at the other one, the largest one that is on the North side off exit 10, and I'm glad that we're having the same," said Juan Sala.

Publix says about 100 people are working in the new store this week trying to get everything ready for shoppers.

The doors will officially open at 7:00 o'clock in the morning on December 14th.
