EDITORIAL: Alabama recently passed a new ethics law that limited gifts for public employees.

It was aimed at stopping corruption and keeping people from accepting gifts in return for favors, but it had an unintended side effect - students couldn't give teachers some types of Christmas gifts.

For example, people in Alabama couldn't give their teachers a small gift card. That's ridiculous.

Governor Bentley wants lawmakers to amend the law. To make it clear that teachers can receive seasonal gifts.

We agree with the governor in this case - teachers work so hard. Many times they go above and beyond the call of duty. We should be able to give a special "Thank You" during the holidays.
