Routine traffic stop leads to drug bust

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – About 23 pounds or 10 kilos approximately of marijuana was seized by a Lee County officer during a routine traffic stop.

A Lee County deputy pulled over 25-year old Amanda Meeks of Hampton, Virginia for a traffic violation along Interstate 85.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones says the deputy smelled marijuana coming from the car, and got consent to search.  When the deputy unzipped two black duffel backs he found several plastic shrink rapped containers of marijuana.

"We are fully aware when you have an interstate it is a corridor great for commerce, but it also is a good way to transport illicit drugs and in this case they are not going to reach their destination," says Jones.

Meeks has made a $27,000 bond as investigators try to figure out if she is the grower or simply a carrier for a larger source.

This was the largest bust in several years for the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say they are determined to get marijuana and other illegal drugs off the streets. If you have any information on suspicious drug activity in your community you are asked to call investigator.
