Fantasy in Lights brings holiday spirit to Callaway Gardens

For 20 years, Fantasy in Lights has been entertaining the young and the old with colorful lights and holiday music.  Now, the drive-through light spectacular is boasting recognition from National Geographic as one of the top 10 places in the world for holiday lights.

Eight million lights make the roads in Callaway Gardens transform more than a dozen holiday scenes.

Visitors just leaving the show try to choose which scene is their favorite.  With everything from a favorite Christmas carol to a battle between fairies and Jack Frost, they say it is not easy.

"The 12 days of Christmas scene," said 7-year-old Gannon Sprinkle.

"The part that went from spring to winter," said his mother, Koren Sprinkle.

Tim Chason, the Executive Vice President for Callaway Gardens Resort, says they start work in August to bring these lights to life.

"It takes us about two and a half to three months to put in all the scenes.  And, year long, we're working on the scenes from changing out light bulbs to putting new strands of lights on there," said Chason.

After 20 years, Fantasy in Lights has been recognized numerous times for their holiday cheer.  Now, National Geographic has named this light extravaganza as one of the ten best places in the world for holiday lights.

Chason says it would not have been possible without the team they have at Callaway Gardens.

"It's not just one person.  It's a lot of team members.  [There are] a lot of creative people, but also, [there are] those folks who help load and unload trolleys," said Chason.

Fantasy in Lights takes 32 miles of cable, 20 trolleys making multiple trips, and countless numbers of handmade decorations, but Chason says it is all worth it when you can hear the exclamations of joy.

"I just like Christmas lights.  That's why it makes it special," said Sprinkle.

"They are just great sounds to hear.  Those people laughing and having good time and enjoying the season of Christmas," said Chason.

Fantasy in Lights will be open through December 30th.  Tickets are $22 for adults and $11 for children.  However, on December 25, those prices drop to $16 for adults and $8 for children.  For more information, call 1-800-225-5292.
