COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - New Year's Eve is a time for celebration, but if you find that you celebrated too much and need a safe ride home, there is an option for you.
"Safety Cab is a community outreach provided by Saint Francis Hospital and our aim is to reduce the number of DUI related accidents and fatalities," explained Safety Cab coordinator Jessica Pate.
The saying goes "nothing in life comes for free", but that isn't the case with Safety Cab. By simply dialing 706-660-6069 a taxi driver will take you home safely from a party or a bar.
Pate said, "We partner with a cab companies and callers call our number, the dispatchers call the cab companies and the ride shows up."
Jessica Pate, who works with public relations for the hospital, adds Saint Francis is also working with other businesses to spread the word to make sure everyone knows how to take advantage of the program, "We have local sponsors that help off-set the cost of promotional materials. We partner with safety officers in Columbus, Fort Benning and Phenix City and they distribute promotional material to bars and liquor stores for us."
Safety Cab ends at 2 a.m. New Year's Day, and that's when Saint Francis Hospital pays the cab companies for all their hard work. But Pate says keep in mind, this is not a chauffeur service, the free ride is just to get you home from the party, "We think it's important for party-goers to designate a driver and in the case they do not have one then we'd like for them to call Safety Cab so they can stay safe on the street."
If you've had too much to drink and need a ride home from now until 2 a.m. News Year's Day call (706) 660-6069 for your free ride. And remember it's always nice to tip your driver, especially if they are keeping you safe.
