COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Fort Benning now confirms the man who is accused of New Year's Day child cruelty is 3rd Brigade soldier Sergeant Shane Hinkson.

He was taken into custody by the Columbus Police Department on Sunday just before 4 p.m.

His eight-month-old son was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Columbus Sunday afternoon after police say Hinkson shook the child.  He was later transported to Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta, where he remains in critical, but stable condition.

Authorities tell News Leader 9 doctors at Egleston are monitoring him for brain swelling and other injuries commonly associated with Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Sgt. Hinkson remains in the Muscogee County jail on $100,000 bond for the child cruelty charges.
