Elderly couple killed instantly on HWY 280 in Smiths Station

An elderly Florida couple died after being hit by a truck on New Years Eve as they stood on Highway 280 in Lee County.

Troopers say around 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning, 84-year-old A.C. Jordan and his 81-year-old  wife Eunice were killed instantly when they were hit near the 1100 block of Highway 280.

It is believed that the couple had been visiting relatives in Alexander City, AL and was on their way home to Live Oak, FL.

But for some reason, the couple's Lexus sedan either stopped or slowed to a very low rate of speed.

The Lee County Coroner says driver of Ford Taurus was unable to avoid the car and rear ended them.

Troopers believe after the first accident, the Florida couple got out of their car to survey the damage, but their car was still in the roadway.

Troopers tell us the couple was killed instantly in a second accident when a Ford pickup truck crashed into them and their vehicle.

The driver of the truck and Taurus were taken to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment.

Investigators add that weather may have been a factor in this accident.

The accident remains under investigation by the Alabama State Troopers and the Lee County Coroner's office.

Law enforcement officers are reminding drivers even if an accident is over you are still in danger, especially if it occurred on a busy highway like 280. If possible get your vehicle or yourself to safety on a shoulder or median and call 911 for help as soon as possible.
