Toddler killed in Columbus house fire on New Year's Day

COLUMBUS, GA - A family is mourning after the loss of a toddler over the weekend. Two-year-old Jaylen Jackson died in a house fire on New Year's Day.

Officials say the toddler was inside the house on 32nd Avenue in south Columbus when a fire started around 10 a.m. New Year's Day.

Family members say it was a neighbor that called 9-1-1 after seeing smoke and flames coming from the home. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to control the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

We're told two other people inside the home were able to escape the blaze and make it outside safely, but Jaylen wasn't so lucky. Firefighters pulled him out of a back bedroom window during the fire. The Muscogee County coroner pronounced the little boy dead at the scene just after 10:30.

Following the fire that destroyed their home, family members have been put in a hotel by members of the local Red Cross.

Jaylen Jackson's body will be sent to the Georgia State Crime Lab for an autopsy Tuesday. The results will give a better indication as to exactly how he died, whether it was smoke inhalation, or an injury he sustained during the fire.
