From the Opelika Police Department

OPELIKA, AL(WTVM) -  A single-car accident Thursday afternoon in Opelika claimed the life of 17-year-old Julia Leigh Burdell of Opelika.

Police say, around 3:15 p.m., she apparently lost control of her Jeep on I-85 and flipped several times killing her instantly from a massive head injury.

Burdell was the driver and the only occupant of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 

She was a student at Beulah High School and was on her way to East Alabama Medical Center where she was an EAMC Auxiliary teen volunteer. 

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by Opelika Police and the Lee County Coroner.

Ms. Julia Leigh Burdell, of Beulah, was born on September 13, 1994, and passed away in Opelika on January 5, 2012. She was 17 years old, and was of the Baptist faith.

Ms. Burdell was a Junior at Beulah High School; an honor student, a member of the Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Math Club, Marching and Concert Band. She was a second degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and a volunteer at East Alabama Medical Center.

Ms. Burdell was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Herbert and Jean Burdell.

She is survived by her parents, Christy Sims Burdell and John C. Burdell; maternal grandparents, Dot and Lamar Sims; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, many friends, and her boyfriend, PFC Josh Sanford.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Chambers County Humane Society in Memory of Julia Burdell.
