Friday afternoon, the Columbus Fire Department was called to a fire at an apartment building on Cedar Avenue in Columbus.

Around 4:00 p.m., several units responded to the Midtown Lofts on Cedar Avenue. That's located between Wynnton Road and 13th Street.

Occupants in the building had to be evacuated as several doors were forced opened in the process.

Officials on the scene said the fire started on the outside of the building after a person that was smoking on the balcony accidentally started a fire.  The fire was sparked by boxes that were placed on the balcony.

Columbus Department Fire Chief Ricky Shores tells News Leader 9 there were no injuries reported at the scene. Officials add there was minimal fire and smoke damage to the apartments.

The Midtown Lofts is a 7-story low-rise apartment building.
