GA student expenses to surpass scholarships

ATLANTA (AP) - New estimates show that Georgia college students will be paying more out-of-pocket than what they receive in HOPE scholarship money by 2015.

The Georgia Student Finance Commission told lawmakers Monday that lottery proceeds cannot keep pace with the demand for scholarships, despite cuts made last year by the Legislature to rein in spending.

The commission projects that a University of Georgia student will pay $2,732 each semester starting in 2015. But that student's HOPE scholarship would only cover $2,461 in expenses.

Rep. Ron Stephens, a Republican from Savannah, said that he wants the state to install video lottery terminals at three sites to boost lottery funds and support the scholarships. Gov. Nathan Deal has said he doesn't support expanding gambling.
