Fire investigator and son arrested for felony theft

A Columbus fire investigator and his son are facing felony charges following a weekend theft in Chattahoochee County.

It was during regular business hours Sunday at Coleman's Grocery in Chattahoochee County when the owners noticed two men loading up stolen property on the side of the building. They called 9-1-1 but it turns out one of the suspects is a law enforcement official himself.

The Chattahoochee County Sheriff's Office says Darrell Bryant and his son Darrell Bryant II were taking more than $500 worth of scrap metal from outside the store. The suspects claimed someone gave them permission to take the items, but business owners aren't buying it.

After arresting them, deputies discovered Lt. Darrell Bryant Senior is an arson investigator with the Columbus Fire Department. He has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the investigation.

The pair was charged with criminal trespassing and felony theft by taking and were taken to the Muscogee County Jail.

Both Bryants have bonded out of jail and their case has been bound over to Superior Court.
