COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The first major phase of the ready to raft white water course is nearing completion.
For the past few months an Alabama channel has been in construction.
It will provide access to the Georgia side of the Chattahoochee River for construction and it's where kayaks and rafts will be lowered into the water.
"They're getting in the final stages of completing the Alabama channel and probably within next month or month in a half the Alabama channel will be completed," said Richard Bishop with Uptown Columbus.
Once construction is finished there, Uptown Columbus leaders say they will make a plan and begin construction on the Georgia side, setting a frame for the future whitewater course.
It will run 2.5 mile down the river; and is expected to bring more than 500 jobs to the Columbus and Phenix City area.
