Former deputy chief sentenced for embezzling

A former deputy fire chief for one East Alabama town was sentenced in court Thursday on federal embezzlement charges.

Angelia Curran was the deputy chief of the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department in Smiths Station, AL.

She was sentenced to five years of probation and was ordered to pay restitution.

Curran was indicted by a federal grand jury in October and pleaded guilty before a federal judge.

Between July 2006 and January 2010, Curran embezzled and stole more than $28,000 of FEMA grant funds.
