COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The lives of two Columbus teens were changed forever after police say they were playing with a handgun.
Columbus police are calling it an accidental shooting, but it left one teen in critical condition and sent another one to jail.
Columbus police said the incident happened Friday night just before midnight on Celia Drive. The initial call was for a drive-by shooting, but upon further investigation they discovered the shooting was done by a friend of the victim.
Witnesses tell police 19 year old Quintavious Garner went to his 14 year old friend's house on Celia Drive with a handgun he claimed he found. Garner was playing around with the gun, pointing it at the 14 year old and another boy who was at the house. He told police he did not think the gun was loaded and he was "dry firing" the weapon, when it went off and shot the 14 year old in the chest.
The 14 year old was rushed to the Columbus Regional Medical Center where he remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit. Garner was placed under arrest.
Garner is charged with two counts of reckless conduct, for pointing the gun at both young men. He is also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and pointing a pistol at another.
Quintavious Garner remains in the Muscogee County Jail. He will appear in Recorder's Court Monday morning.
