New middle school under construction in Midland

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Even though the official groundbreaking is Wednesday but construction on what is being called "Middle School 6" began a few months ago.

Contractors are making way for a brand new middle school in the heart of the Midland area.

Lynn Wright can see and hear construction from her back yard. She says she is happy about the new school because her 8 year old daughter will more than likely be a student there in a few years.

"We like the idea of having the school close and we are excited about the new school as well as the state of the art teaching they will be putting in," says Wright.

The new school currently referred to as middle school number 6 will have 46 classrooms with interactive smartboards is expected to cost about $19 million..

Valerie Fuller with Muscogee County School District says this price tag is not out of the ordinary for new model schools and that people in the community foot the bill.

Fuller said, "School is built with SPLOST funds public funds tax dollars that voters go to the polls to vote on."

Five miles away and across Manchester Expressway is the current midland middle school.  A lot of residents are wondering why the system is building two middle schools so close together.

"We anticipated that more students would be coming in for BRAC but we did not get those students however that wasn't the basic need for the school," Fuller explains.

Overcrowding in midland middle school was the biggest reason. The Midland area is bustling with new homes and other expansion projects, which is why the school was built.

Another reason News Leader 9 were told is the land. The location selected for the school was centrally located and available for development.

Wright feels like the school board made the best choice.

"I would rather have the two school and divide out the children so that they are not over-crowded as opposed to having one school and two many children in one class."

There is no word yet on when the school is expected to be completed.
