Construction on new Opelika school could begin this summer

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – Construction will begin on the new multi-million dollar Opelika High School this summer.  The school board has been working on plans to replace the 1970s building for a decade.

News Leader 9 sat down with Superintendent Mark Neighbors who took us inside the massive two year construction project.

"It is about teaching and learning," says Neighbors. "We have great students and great teachers and kids and they deserve to be in a building that reflects that."

For 10 years, Superintendent Neighbors has planned, dreamed then waited for the money to fund a new high school. The money was secured last fall, when the city council approved a one-cent sales tax.

"That building was built in 1971, it was slated to last a 30 year life span so we are a long 10 years past that."

The 24-month project begins in June.

Neighbors says this is a two year project, and students will continue their high school education on the same campus during this massive project. He says safety is a top priority. Logistics are being carefully studied and planned, to make sure students continue to learn in a safe environment that will be inundated with construction equipment and workers.

Neighbors says students and teachers have contributed ideas to the design that focuses on technology.

If the bidding process goes well in March, construction will begin this summer.
