ATLANTA (AP) - Law enforcement agencies would be required to auction off confiscated or abandoned guns to the public under a proposal from a Georgia lawmaker.
Sen. Don Balfour said Thursday that his legislation would end the destruction of guns by some police departments that seize weapons. The proceeds would go back to the local or state government.
The Republican lawmaker from Snellville said the National Rifle Association supports his bill.
Under the proposal, state officials would first be required to return stolen guns to their owners. Agencies with seized firearms would be required to auction them off at least once every six months.
