Friends mourn death of Columbus mother killed in South Carolina

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - Yolanda Lee fought back tears as she recalled some of her best moments with her friend Velencia Compton.

"We all sat at the lunch table together we all met up after school, on Sunday we may go to Carver Park, Civic Center," Lee said.

Columbus Police and South Carolina investigators believe 25-year old Leo Deandre Scott allegedly shot Compton in the head at her home in Port Royal, South Carolina Thursday Night.

Valencia Compton's mother Michelle Compton told News Leader Nine that Valencia was a good spirit and nice person. She says knowing those traits will live on in Velencia's three years old Jayden is comforting to her.

Her mother says Valencia was expected be promoted to Petty Officer in the Navy. She was studying to become a dentist.

Police say Scott took their child and Compton's car and drove to Columbus where he dropped off the child with his family members.   Columbus police found Compton's abandoned car in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart off Buena Vista Road.

While police search for Scott Compton's friends say her legacy will live on. Not just in her child but also her love for the Navy.

"We are working out now because we are trying to go to the Navy and that's the reason why I am because I asked her about it and she loves it," Crystal Davis said.

Columbus police are still looking for Scott and have no reason to believe that he has left the city.  If you have any information on his whereabouts you are asked to call 706-653-3400.
