Opelika police find child's skull in backyard

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

The remains of what authorities are calling a child of about 5 to 7 years in age were found in an Opelika trailer park.

Yvonne Johnson's son found a small skull Saturday morning behind her home in Brook Haven Trailer park.

Officers secured the scene, investigators were summoned and the Lee County coroner was notified.

Johnson says the skull was not in her yard Friday.

"It was a little person's skull. It was little and had little hair on it," says Johnson "I'm not sure where I was standing, but it had teeth."

Opelika Police believe the skull belongs to a child and so far they do not know the race or sex.

Investigators conducted a search of the trailer park near Hurst Street but did not find any other remains.

The coroner tells News Leader 9 that he believes cadaver dogs and search teams will be back at the scene Sunday or Monday.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Opelika Police Department Investigative Services Division at (334) 705-5220, Opelika Police Communications (334) 705-5263, or the Secret Witness Hotline at (334) 745-8665.
