Driver OK after crashing into baby store

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - When you go to a baby store the last thing you expect to see is broken glass and cinder blocks, but that's what you would have found Sunday night at Baby and Beyond on Miller Road.

Police say a woman in a white Taurus caused all the damage. Witnesses say the woman sped over a median, missing two brick columns, then smashed head on into the store.

Sales Associate Cathy Fuller and a pregnant customer were standing in the front of the store, barely missed by the speeding vehicle.

"I was thinking an airplane had just crashed into the top of the building, but all this smoke was in building. So we were just running to go out the back because we thought the building was fixing to catch on fire," said Fuller.

Fuller and her customer circled around the back of the building and when they reached the front they quickly went to check on the driver.

"She was actually lying over in the car, she was not coherent. I would say, could see she had a broken ankle and she was unconscious," said Fuller.

Fuller adds in the end they are all fortunate to still be alive. "I say the lord looked after everyone that was here today. We just walked to the back of the store out of the way of flying cinder block and stuff. Then the lady was guided between the two columns. She's hurt but, you know she does have her life."

The driver was transported to the Medical Center with serious injuries. The pregnant customer is doing just fine. Cathy says she stayed very calm. So she knows she will make a good mom. The owner is taking this pretty well, he said he's having a big scratch and dent sale next week.

The driver is currently in the hospital listed in satisfactory condition. The owner says he hopes to be back in business this Saturday for a scratch and dent sale.
