Free tax services around town

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) –  Tax season has rolled back around and if 1040-EZ and W-9 sound like a foreign language, doing your own taxes may be out of the question.

If your household makes $50,000 or less a year, a group called The Chattahoochee Valley Vita Coalition says come get them done for free.

The Goodwill Success Center on Cross Country Drive in Columbus had a full house Friday. They are part of a team of organizations like Mission Columbus, Homeless Resource Network, Consumer Credit Counseling Center, and the IRS dedicated to providing this service.

"We are really busy. Specifically right here goodwill operates its own sites and so it's independent from the others but then again we're all partners in a larger effort," said manager Kari Finley

Also a part of the coalition, United Way provides support to the training centers. President Scott Ferguson says the process is simple and painless, "This is a great process. It's a first class way to get you taxes done. Get them free and that money stays in your pocket."

The services are all performed by trained volunteers."Their volunteers go through IRS training and they can file your returns electronically and last year we brought in over $3 million to folks right here in the Chattahoochee Valley," said Ferguson.

This service is not just for people with simple tax returns. Finley says they can itemize with credits, and do other complicated tax return; however, there are some exceptions.

"There are certain things we cannot do such as if you have rental income or if you're active military, if you're active military there's a special vita site on post for that. So we do have some limitation bit in general we can do a good majority of tax returns," said Finley

Ferguson says it takes seven to ten business days for people to get their refunds back.
