Auburn's big development boom

AUBURN, AL (WXTX) – Shopping and dining is expanding in downtown Auburn with a new retail shopping center.  News Leader Nine spoke with the developer and the city manager about the massive multi-million dollar project that is creating jobs and additional tax revenue.

When you think of shopping and eating out in downtown auburn you think of the stores and restaurants along College Street. But a developer out of Mobile is hoping a $2 million retail development along Glenn Avenue will create more retail and dining opportunities for Auburn residents.

Big changes are under construction on Glenn Avenue in the form of a 1,200 square foot shopping center that overlooks the busy street.

City Manager  Charlie Duggan says, "This used to be ole houses that had been run down over a number of years, they have leveled it and made it prime retail property."

In March, Tropical Smoothie a caribbean style café will open at the new shopping center.

Nazmi Ozokur with Senin LLC a group out of Mobile is working with Auburn resident Billy Cox to bring Tropical Smoothie, a computer retail store that supports Apple products, a night club and a wing restaurant/sports bar to the 1,200 square foot retail center that's nearly complete.

Duggan says by the time the first stores are open, the city should be finished with a road widening project along Glenn Avenue, which will create three lanes and new sidewalks.

"We are very excited about this one of the things our planning commission and city council wanted to do was expand Downtown Auburn atmosphere and part of that is bringing the shops out to the street, so you don't have your traditional parking lot in front then store, and this developer worked with our planning commission and our planners helped and their architects came up with the final drawings and we think it's going to be great," says Duggon.

The developer believes 100 new jobs will be created when the shopping center is up and running.
