Columbus (WTVM) - Columbus State swept the opening series of the 2012 baseball season, beating Clark Atlanta 15-3, 33-0, and 19-0.
The Cougars were led by designated hitter Cameron Scott. For the weekend, Scott batted .833 (10-for-12) drove in 15 runs and also connected on three home runs. The junior slugged 1.833 in the three games.
In the first game of the series Saturday, the Cougars had to dust off some cobwebs early on. In the top of the second a hit-by pitch, error and a base hit allowed CAU to get on the board. But, Columbus State exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth on the heels of four extra-base hits. Sophomore Tyler Carpenter (1-0) picked up the victory after going five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Game two broke records as the Cougars dominated 33-0. The 24 runs scored in the third inning broke the Peach Belt Conference record for the most runs in an inning. The previous mark of 16 was reached twice with the last coming by Armstrong Atlantic State University in 2006. The 33 runs scored in the game is a program high for CSU. Scott tied the PBC record for RBIs in a game with 10.
Will Casey (1-0) looked impressive on the mound in his Columbus State debut Sunday. The senior tossed five shutout innings allowing just one hit and issuing one free pass. Casey struck out six Clark Atlanta batters.
Next weekend CSU will host Saint Leo for a three-game series beginning on Saturday, February 11. First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m. at Ragsdale Field.
