TROUP COUNTY, GA (WTVM) - -
Despite all its scholastic achievements, Troup County Schools tells News Leader 9 it will have to trim millions from next year's budget, cut dozens of jobs and possibly close a magnet school.
The school district says there will be less state funds to support public education. So, the shortfalls in state revenue has been passed down to Troup County.
School officials addressed its budget issues in a called board meeting Monday evening. Administrators proposed the following:
Closing West Side Magnet School
Reduce personnel by 118 staff
Reduce all 240 day personnel to 237 day schedule
Implement two Leave Without Pay Days (LWOP)
Reduce operating budgets to 92% of Fiscal Year 2012 funding levels
Utilize nearly $1.2 million of reserved funds
Other reductions (supplies, textbooks, equipment, travel, etc…)
Troup County School System released the following statement:
"During these tough economic times with proposed state and federal budget cuts, Troup County School System may now face an $11.1 million dollar budget deficit for the 2012-2013 school term. On Monday evening at a called Board meeting, the Superintendent presented proposed options to address anticipated budget cuts due to state mandates and state revenue shortfalls. While we regret eliminating any school program or reducing personnel, we are now compelled to consider every option in order to balance the budget. We will continue to do our very best to provide a quality education for all students and a unified working environment for all staff. We welcome community input; please visit our website at www.troup.org to offer suggestions or recommendations."
The school system currently employs close to 2,000 faculty, staff and support personnel. There are nearly 13,000 students in Troup County.
News Leader 9 is following this story. We'll have the latest information as soon as it becomes available.
