COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The man police have been tracking is dead. Murder suspect, Leo Scott, died from a single gunshot wound during a standoff situation in north Columbus Thursday.  Authorities say Scott killed himself.

Around 9:30 am, detectives and the U.S. Marshal Service went to an apartment home located on 54th Street and Thomason Avenue, attempting to serve a warrant for murder.

When they knocked, two women came to the door. Police then escorted them out of the apartment. The women identified a photograph of Leo Scott and told authorities that he was inside.

Investigators say when they went to knock a second time on the door, they heard a single gunshot.

That's when a SWAT team was called to the scene.

Nearby residents received a robocall from police alerting them to an armed and dangerous suspect in the area.

Once the team entered the apartment, they found Scott dead.

Columbus investigators were working with authorities in Beaufort County, SC.  Scott was being sought there for the January 26th murder of Velencia Compton, the mother of his 3-year-old son.

Compton, a sailor, was Scott's ex-girlfriend.  Investigators say Scott took Compton's car that night and drove the child to Columbus.

Shortly afterwards, police found the youngster unharmed and the car in the Walmart parking lot off Buena Vista Road in Columbus.
