AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -
AUBURN, Ala. (WTVM) - A new leader has been selected for Auburn City Schools. Dr. Karen DeLano was named the new superintendent this week by the board of education.
DeLano grew up in Auburn, attended Cary Woods elementary, and obtained three degrees from Auburn University. She knows Auburn, but as the new superintendent her goal is to learn much more.
"My first priority is to get to know the people. I want to spend as much time as possible getting to know the staff, and the staff in the schools, getting to know the principals and I want to get to know the community, my roots are in Auburn, but it's been a while, So I want to spend a lot of time getting to know people and doing a lot of listening," DeLano explained.
DeLano says handling Auburn's growth and budgeting constraints continue to be the challenges. She's a strong supporter of technology in the classrooms and has won awards for her curriculum development. As a parent, former principal and teacher DeLano trusts students to provide information critical to their success.
"The things I ask the students are, what is your favorite thing about this school? And if you could change anything about your school, what would it be? They are the persons who are the quickest to be honest because they talk straight from the heart," she said.
Her contract, salary and start date have not been finalized. DeLano will continue her duties as assistant superintendent for Vestavia Hills, until she takes over for Dr. Terry Jenkins, who is retiring.
