An Arizona police chief has been chose to lead the police force in Kentucky's largest city.

Metro Louisville officials announced on Tuesday that they have hired Steve Conrad as the new chief of the city's police department. Mayor Greg Fischer said Conrad earned accolades as a steady and strong leader in Glendale, Ariz., where he was hired as police chief in 2005.

Now, Conrad is headed back to his native Louisville, where he began his law enforcement career in 1980 and worked his way up to assistant chief before leaving the department in 2005.

Conrad says he is "excited" about the opportunity to lead the Louisville Metro Police Department. His first day will be March 19. He will be paid $165,000 annually.
